George 'Geordie' Armstrong 1944-2000

George Armstrong Biography .

George (56) was a kind, warm-hearted man who spent the last decade coaching the reserve team side. He was an inspiring coach as well as a superb player in his day, featuring in Arsenal's 1970-71 Double winning side. More importantly George was an effervescent, honest, down to earth soul, widely respected by everyone at Arsenal Football Club. He will be sorely missed.

Joined Arsenal: As an amateur in early August 1961, turning professional on August 24th 1961.

After making a record 621 appearances, George left Arsenal in September 1977 to join up with Leicester City. His appearance record was later broken by David O'Leary (722) and Tony Adams (624).

Other information:

Prior to joining Arsenal George 'Geordie' Armstrong qualified as an electrician. On leaving Arsenal he also played for Leicester City and ended his professional playing days with Stockport County in 1978.

As a coach:

Aston Villa in 1979 and then on to Fulham Town, Middlesbrough, Narvik (Norway) and Kuwait before re-joining Arsenal as Reserve Team manager in 1990.
